Chapter News

Two Large Scale Disasters Keep Area Volunteers Busy

In the early morning hours on Thursday, April 15, a fire destroyed the Parkway Apartments on Centre Parkway near Tates Creek Elementary School in Lexington. The fire, intentionally set, destroyed or damaged 15 apartments. City inspectors later condemned 21 other units.

With 64 people left homeless, the Bluegrass Chapter of the American Red Cross acted quickly and opened a shelter at Tates Creek Elementary. The shelter provided a place to go for approximately 55 of those individuals daily with 20 individuals staying the night. Food was provided by the Salvation Army. "A huge thank you must go out to everyone involved, but especially to the the 32 Red Cross Volunteers who staffed the shelter for two and half days," says Volunteer Director Jamie Etherton. "It is because of their willingness and the generosity of many wonderful donors that we were able to provide assistance to our friends and neighbors during their time of need."

The Chapter also continues to assist families adversely affected by the recent flooding in central and eastern Kentucky. "We have had major damage in 16 of the 55 counties we assist," stated Director of Disaster Operations for the Bluegrass Chapter Kerry Graul. "Over 60 homes were totally destroyed and more than 350 homes had major damage inflicted by the flood."

The Red Cross opened five shelters in the region and provided temporary housing to over 100 people. More than 60 Red Cross volunteers have come together to lend a hand. Disaster Assessment Teams have gone door-to-door checking almost 1000 homes in affected areas. Casework teams are deployed to the impacted area and are providing appropriate financial assistance to the affected families based on flood damage.

 Jamie Etherton

It has only been a couple of weeks, but new Volunteer Director Jamie Etherton has had to adapt quickly. "The Centre Parkway fire happened just a week or so after I started," says Jamie. "I learned very quickly that everyday here is different and there is never a dull moment. I've gotten to know a lot of the volunteers in a short time and I look forward to working with all of them."

Originally from Lexington, Jamie is 2003 graduate of Centre College. She is the former Program Director for the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA) in Danville and the former Volunteer Coordinator for CASA in Lexington. Please join us in welcoming Jamie to the Red Cross Family!

with Co-Chairs Isabel Yates and Amber Philpott

honoring those individudals who make Lexington and Fayette County such a wonderful place to live and work.  "Our goals were to strengthen the local Red Cross chapter, educate our constituents about the programs and services offered by the American Red Cross, and recognize community heroes, " stated Chief Executive Officer of the Bluegrass Chapter Terry Burkhart.

A campaign team of 42 community leaders led by co-chairs Isabel Yates and Amber Philpott, began work on February 11 and has successfully raised over $112,000 for local Red Cross programs and services. During the campaign, donors raising or contributing  a minimum of $1,000 were eligible to nominate an individual as the 2010 Fayette County "Hero of the Year."

The Bluegrass Chapter was proud to honor each of this year's nominees including awarding Ginny Ramsey, the 2010 Red Cross Fayette County Hero the Year. Click here for a list of this year's nominees and finalists.

Salute to Rich Brooks

Several Bluegrass Chapter Board Members and Staff  with Rich and Karen Brooks

The rain didn't dampen the spirits of those who attended the Salute to Rich Brooks event on April 24 benefitting the local Red Cross Chapter and the Rich Brooks Foundation. The evening included lots of good food, a silent auction, and an opportunity to meet Coach Rich Brooks at beautiful Donamire Farm, home of Don and Mira Ball. Tom Leech, introduced the Coach who spoke to the group about how important the work of the Red Cross is and how we as a community need to do all we can to support it.

Ride with the Red

The Bluegrass Chapter hosted the 3rd Annual Ride with the Red on Sat., May 15 at Equus Run Vineyard. Ride with the Red is a charity cycling ride that benefits Red Cross disaster programs right here in the Bluegrass. This year, close to 300 Riders took part. The event raised over $6,300 to help residents in central Kentucky prepare for and respond to disasters.

The event would not have been possible without the fantastic partnership of the Bluegrass Cycling Club, the Lexington Clinic, the Urgent Treatment Center, and Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling.

In addition, a huge thank you goes to all those who participated, to the many volunteers, and especially to WKYT, Equus Run Vineyard, Capital City Cycles, Pedal the Planet Bicycle Shop, Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Team in Training, Clif Bar, Road ID, Chamois But'r, and Biofreeze.

Plus, we would like to thank our honorary ride leaders Sam Dick of WKYT, and Susan Bradley-Cox, winner of the 2009 World Triathlon Union Championship.  Click here to see photos from the event.
